"The idea to write and record an album of organ trio music was largely born of the fact that I share a rental with two other musicians - the ubiquitous Lochlan Feng, and the incomparable Sam Castan - and wanted to utilise my (very) modest home studio space in Tarragindi (Prime Audial Soup) to do something creative with my housemates.
When he first moved in, Feng blessed our studio space not only with his omnipresence, but also with a Hammond organ and Leslie speaker; Sam had blessed us with the gift of multiple drum kits and a love of Frank Zappa. And so, with Feng tasked to bass and chordal duties, and Sam being the very capable and inventive drummer that he is, we had a vehicle for improvised music.
In July of 2023, during my mid-year break from teaching, I wrote an album's worth of material, rehearsed it over a few sessions with the trio, and recorded it in a day with dear friend and all-round top bloke, Lachlan Kidd. Mitchell Jay then spent the coming months working tirelessly on the mixes to bring some life to our humble home recording.
In writing for the trio, I wanted to do something a bit more unique than what one might expect from the standard organ trio format. I of course wanted to pay homage to the household names of the idiom like Jimmy Smith, John Patton, Dr Lonnie Smith etc.. but also wanted to explore other possibilities that could arise from the orchestration of a Hammond organ, a guitar and a drum kit.
The result, I feel, is a weird and wonderfully eclectic collection of music, that traverses and celebrates different styles and cultures, pays tribute to some of my favourite composers, and captures the synergy of three oddball muso housemates flying high on the wings of a dream."
